December 8, 2009
HP Esia Online (C6100): an integrated messaging phone, fully loaded with applications, a compelling solution to increase ARPU.
- Miyowa to provide the first unified community applications' suite! -
Hong Kong, December 8, 2009 - Indonesia's Bakrie Telecom (one of the fastest growing CDMA operators globally), supported by Huawei (a world leading telecom solutions provider), Qualcomm Incorporated (the leading developer of advanced wireless chipset technologies), Miyowa (the global leader in rich mobile messaging and social network aggregation solutions), Facebook® (gives people the power to communicate and share information through the social graph) and Opera Software (a leader in browser for desktop and mobile devices) announce the launch of the HP Esia Online (C6100), one of the world's most accessible and full-featured QWERTY messaging phone that is custom built for emerging markets. The launch was announced at the CDMA Summit 2009 in Hong Kong on December 8, 2009. The CDMA summit is an annual event focused on device procurements that is attended by hundreds of executives from the CDMA ecosystem, including CDMA2000 operators, OEMs (Original Equipment Manufacturers), ODMs (Original Design Manufacturers) and other stakeholders from across the globe.
The HP Esia Online (C6100) is a custom-developed smartphone targeting the mass market. It is a stylish and sleek CDMA2000 1X bar-type phone, with a full QWERTY keypad and 2.4-inch QVGA display, based on Qualcomm's QSC1110 platform. The phone has a digital camera, micro SD card slot, supports MP4/MP3/AAC music playback and can be used as a modem to access the Internet.
The key differentiator, which makes this phone unique and attractive to mass market consumers, is the fact that the phone is preloaded with services addressing new-age consumer needs like email, social networking, instant messaging, browsing, entertainment and information access. The suite of applications includes Opera Mini microbrowser, and a messaging suite of consumer email (POP3/IMAP), Yahoo!® Messenger, Windows Live™ Messenger, Facebook and Google Talk™ custom-developed for C6100 by Miyowa, a premier mobile social networks aggregation company.
The service suite is available to end-users at affordable weekly or daily ‘all inclusive' price points, on a per service basis. This a-la-carte is a market innovation, since it gives the power of consumption back to the customer by letting them decide what they want, when they want it and for how long. This stand alone bite size pricing has been a proven strategy for Bakrie Telecom in Indonesia for enrichment of the ARPU.
Erik Meijer, Deputy President Director of Bakrie Telecom said, "The basic needs of the mass market youth are evolving beyond vanilla Voice & SMS. The emergence of Web 2.0 has been one of the primary driving forces for this evolution, which is emerging across all social economic segments. HP Esia Online, with the end-user price well below USD100, is part of the next wave of Bakrie Telecom's disruptive innovations that addresses this need gap and will further drive the company's growth."
"This phone with its embedded service suite comprising best of breed applications will ensure revenue expansion as well as enable us to create customer loyalty and stickiness through community-based services in a predominantly prepaid service market. It also makes browsing, social networking and messaging accessible to a much wider audience than ever before," remarked Meijer.
Glory Cheung, spokesperson for the Huawei Device Company, explained "this latest smart phone reflects our strategy of customer-centric innovation. Huawei has partnered with Bakrie Telecom for devices for three years, and we together have launched many successful thematic feature phones like the world's most complete Muslim phones, Christian phones, Hindu phones, ethnic Chinese phones, rock group phones, music phones and social networking phones especially for the Indonesian market."
"This latest C6100 messaging phone combines the currently popular applications with the convenience of a QWERTY keypad to bring an amazing new experience for customers" said Glory.
"Qualcomm is delighted to collaborate with Bakrie Telecom on their introduction of the C6100," said Harry K. Nugraha, senior director and country manager of Indonesia, Qualcomm. "The C6100, a 3G device, leverages Qualcomm's single-chip solution, enabling smaller device form factors and providing better power management. Furthermore, the device is based on our Brew® technology, providing Bakrie subscribers access to some of the leading applications and services from around the world."
Pascal Lorne, Miyowa's CEO added, "this first deployment of our InTouch 5™ platform for Bakrie Telecom is a fantastic achievement for Miyowa, because it is the first time that such a mobile multi-community service is being commercialized in Asia. Our solution provides operators with a unique one-stop-shop, which gives users access to Yahoo!® Messenger, Facebook, Windows Live™ Messenger, Google Talk™ and standard mail, at the same time. Miyowa is the first to provide a multi-headed and stand-alone community service for BREW® and Java™ handsets. We thank all our partners including Bakrie Telecom, Qualcomm and Huawei for this shared success"
"Facebook Mobile's mission is to ensure our users are able to share and connect, including when they are away from their computer", said Alison Rosenthal, Head of Business Development, Facebook Mobile. "Working with leaders in the mobile industry such as Qualcomm, enables Bakrie Telecom to offer a unique Facebook experience for the Indonesia market on the C6100 device"
"Opera Mini's unique compression and customization feature offers one of the best mobile browsing experience for users and has made it the world's most popular mobile browser in emerging markets including Indonesia" said James Wei, President Asia/Pacific Opera Software. "Bakrie Telecom's commitment to preload Opera Mini on all its data enabled phones is a significant step to offer a unique, fast and cost-effective browsing experience for all its users."
"Services enabled by mobile devices are a key differentiator for CDMA2000 operators in Indonesia," said Perry LaForge, executive director of the CDMA Development Group (CDG). "Bakrie is providing the applications that users want on an affordable smartphone, introducing consumers in the region to wireless data services and driving operator ARPU."
Bakrie Telecom is certain that this device-service bundle will be the tipping point in other CDMA markets across the globe, with a similar emerging mass market youth segment.
